Peters' Drive-in on Urbanspoon

Started back in 1964, Peters’ Drive-in is a legend amongst Calgarians for their hamburgers and shakes. Since I hear it’s good, there’s a long line up to vouch for it being a decent place to eat, I’m going to give it a try. But, as with all places that are legendary, my expectations are high.

The line is long during lunch hours but quick serving staff keep the line moving at a very good pace. We were behind 5 people and served within 5 minutes. Unlike most busy restaurants, the staff was patient and friendly.

The kitchen is large and busy with a lot of staff. Everything is done the old fashioned way so that means no microwaves like Subways or mini-deep fryers like McDonald’s.

Strawberry Milkshake:

nom1367smao9A tasty creamy milkshake with a high quality you don’t normally find at hamburger chains. I believe they use homogenized milk.

A take out tray:

Fries:

Double burger:

nom1371smjo1Yes, I know, it doesn’t look very appetizing. My expectations are so let down.

Inside the double burger:

nom1373smpc5 It’s actually pretty good. I like the mix of onion, pickles, mustard, and ketchup that they add to all their burgers. The burger meat tastes very much like those from Harvey’s but a little softer and thinner. I highly recommend having at least a double burger. The bread was fresh as well.

The prices are reasonable with milkshakes at $4.50 and my double burger at $3.90. The staff are friendly with a very family like service. And the food quality is fairly good. Peter’s Drive-in just didn’t stand out to me and I didn’t think it was worth goiom1368smom4″ width=”500″ height=”375″ />Old styled foil wrapping for the burgers and paper for the fries and onion rings. There’s no indoor seating but there are picnic tables in their large parking lot.
