Hidden away behind small hills and trees lies a little gem that encompasses much of southern Texas cooking. Situated alongside the river bordering Mexico, where you might catch the usual Border Patrol going up and down the river, Pepe’s on the River is a nice place to enjoy a drink or some food by the waterfront.

The Friday special fried seafood dish:
Fried shrimps, fried catfish, hushpuppies, and I think there was also fried scallops for $8.99 USD. The frying batter, unlike many other restaurants, is infused and very little so it’s not the type you can peel off the shrimp.
Featuring fried shrimp, fried catfish, and BBQ, Pepe’s delivers foods typical of Southern Texas at a decent quality and a good price. They also offer some simple Tex-Mex dishes like tacos but I didn’t get a chance to try. This is a lively environment that can be noisy in the weekend evenings. Since it’s by the river, late in the evening will include bugs with your meal. This is a place you should definitely make a visit to but it’s lack of vegetables (or I’m not willing to try after a couple food poisonings at other meat oriented restaurants) keep it off my list of regulars.
